Worth a Laugh

An 85 Year old widow went on a blind date with a 90 year old man. When she returned to her daughter's house later that night, she seemed upset. "What happened, Mother?" the daughter asked. "I had to slap his face three times!" her mother replied. "You mean he got fresh?" "No", she answered. "I thought he was dead!"

IRONY!
Here we are, printers and binderies using email and internet to communicate our message instead of ink on paper.  Is the internet going to kill our industry?  In my opinion, that depends . . . . that depends on us, and how we respond to what is happening around us.

Firstly, we've all seen the inroads the internet has made on direct mail catalogs, newspapers, annual reports, etc.  But on the other hand the internet is no substitute for wall calendars, posters, menus, theatre programs, etc.  Here's a link to someone who supports this view

Secondly, no one can deny that the internet is a powerful and effective tool for us to collaborate with our customer's and suppliers. One just needs to observe the recent proliferation of e-mail correspondence, online quoting, and web-to-print sites.  If we don't get on this bandwagon, it will run us over.

Thirdly perhaps we should examine the business we are in. Are we in the "printing and finishing business", or are we in the "message communications business"?  The internet is becoming an increasingly larger component of any media campaign.  High speed internet with audio and video capabilities is a disruptive technology which is causing convergence and consolidation of all media industries.  Perhaps we should be asking ourselves what roll we can play in this media convergence and were do we want to be once it has converged.

What does Customer Service mean to you?

According to Wikipedia the term means the provision of service to customers before, during and after a purchase. Going the extra mile for your customer in our competative industry is what sets us apport from the competition. The basic rules for great customer service are:

1. Answer your phone, if you have voicemail ensure you return the call within a reasonable time. We at Classic Bindery have the 30 minute rule, all calls to be returned within 30 minutes!.
2. Make a commitment that you WILL keep. Reliability is a key issue in any business, if you give your customer a deadline adhere to it because if you don't all credibility and trust will be lost.
3. Listen to your customers and make sure you give them what they want. Let your customer talk, listen to what they have to say and make sure they know you are listening and understand their needs.
4. Give your client added value, whether its a free add on service, discount coupon for future purchases, we all like to get more than what we thought we were getting.

Apply these basics, your business will be known for its service levels and the results will be there for all to see.
